Miles turned with a snarl, obviously having recognized the voice who challenged him. Riza craned her neck around the giant man to see who it was, and gave a tiny start when she saw that it was the battle muse woman.
Miles took a threatening step forward and the human took her chance. She stomped down on the back of the man's knee, turning it at just the right angle to smash it into the tenderest part. Miles yelped and went down clutching his leg in agony.
Riza then swung the leather bag she carried and smiled with grim satisfaction as it cracked across the back of his skull. He grunted and fell limply onto his face, unconscious. He wouldn't be badly hurt when he awoke, but Riza did not envy the headache he would surely have.
The human turned to the battle muse and gave a shallow curtsy, smiling in thanks. She then proceeded to remove a sturdy little metal box, a four-inch knife, tied closed with a leather string, and a worn traveler's compass. "Damn," she muttered, inspecting the box and compass. "The box is dented and my compass is cracked."
Riza directed an aggravated stare down at Miles and replaced her things. Chess, having heard the commotion, had made his way back to his companion and decided to sit on the unconscious man's back, looking rather pleased. The girl smiled and scooped up the Cait Sith, hopping over Miles to stand closer to the battle muse.
"Thanks so much," she said in a light, musical voice, beaming cheerily, "I don't think it would have ended well if you hadn't distracted him." The Cait Sith's face broke out into a tiny grin as he nodded in agreement, looking far too large for Riza to be carrying like a normal cat. The girl held out a hand for the other to shake, "I'm Riza, and this is Chess."

The boy looked around nervously after he had called Alyth, waiting for her to show up. For a fleeting moment, he wondered if she had left him alone in The Battle Tower, but then he saw her shock of red hair and relief washed over him. He didn’t know why he felt so safe around this fae warrior but he did. Probably because she was one of the only people to actually offer him help. That seemed like a good reason.
Sky nodded at her question. “Yeah, we can lea – “ His voice was cut off by the sudden commotion, which even he recognized as a fight happening nearby. A circle of people had formed and Alyth was moving off to see what was going on. Not wanting to be alone, Skyvy followed.
The fight was unusual. A tiny little girl versus a large, burly man? Skyvy frowned. That didn’t seem fair at all. But, as much as he wanted to help her, the boy knew that he was too much of a coward to try – even if he wasn’t a coward, he didn’t have the fighting abilities. That man looked like he could use Sky as a toothpick.
However, Alyth wasn’t a coward.
Skyvy watched her march up to the man without a care in the world, calling him out by branding him a coward. The shifter admired her bravery. He wasn’t brave enough to do such a thing. And he certainly wasn’t brave enough to sneak attack the man, like the human girl did. He watched in amazement as the large man dropped to the ground, completely passed out from the blow to the head.
Well, it seemed to end well. People snickered at the man, Miles it seemed, and slowly dissipated back to their places. Skyvy took that chance to timidly walk up beside Alyth, having decided that staying close to her was the best bet. He looked to the girl and the Cait Sith, Riza and Chess, and then quickly looked toward Alyth. He felt kinda bad for not even making an effort to help. But what could he do? Anyone could tell that he was a runner, not a fighter.

The battle muse was just preparing herself to deal with that drunken idiot when the human girl did something that she had absolutely not anticipated; as Miles had his back to her, her leg flew up, slamming straight into the bastard's knee. He howled in agony and cursed as he fell. Well, that was one disadvantage on his part. Well, thanks to that, Alyth had lost her will to fight. Good thing the girl had the sense to whack that man on his head with her satchet. He was well and truly out of commission for the moment and the girl had done surprisingly well. Whatever, he'd be there the next time too.
A vague thought of alarm went out to the timid shifter, but before it could be sparked, she recognized the familiar presence of Skyvy as he lingered by her side. Alyth couldn't help but break out into a grin; that boy was definitely scared of being alone in the rough atmosphere of the Battle Tower. However, Alyth's attention was stolen by the human girl. She was on the ground, inspecting the contents of the bag that she carried. A small knife, a metal box that held some mysterious contents and a compass. Apparently she traveled light with a Cait Sith. She had not seen those creatures for a while now, though she would understand why it would choose the human as a companion.
Alyth nodded her praise away, barely registering it. " S'what I do." She shrugged. "But seeing a human kid dealing with people in this place; that's a first." She noted to Riza. At least she seemed to be able to take care of herself, better than Skyvy seemed to, at least. "Alyth," She replied, giving her name. "And this'un here's another kid I picked up." The battle muse pushed Skyvy forwards with a gentle hand on his back. Not only was it better for conversation's sake, but in case he ran into any trouble, it was easier to keep track of him. However, she gave the shifter the liberty to reveal his name if he chose to.

Well, this girl could certainly take care of herself, couldn't she? Alyth didn't even need to come to her rescue, except for the small distraction of course. Skyvy frowned at the thought; how was it that he had met two females who could handle themselves in a fight? Not that females were weak, but... It was kind of sad that they could defend themselves when he, a male, couldn't.
Ah well. Skyvy couldn't do anything about it, so no point dwelling on it.
Wait, what was going on? The boy suppressed a squeak as Alyth pushed him forward, toward the human girl. Despite his efforts, his face began to turn slightly red and the boy had to duck his head in embarrassment. "Ahh... I'm Skyvy, or Sky if you prefer..." he answered after a moment.

“Well thank you, Alyth.” Riza said again before turning her attention to the shifter boy. “Well hello Sky, no need to look so embarrassed, I’m very laid back.” She chuckled and carefully set Chess down. “I believe I owe my old street friends my life once again. I surely wouldn’t be here was it not for their training.”
Riza smiled sheepishly, “Noble girls aren’t supposed to know how to fight, yet here I am!” The girl’s voice alone spoke of what her life had been like before wandering violent places like the Battle Tower. It had a distinct City accent and her way of speaking was common among the upper class, though there were a few distinct differences. First off was her tone; while most nobles tended to be cold and haughty, Riza was nothing but cheery and musical. The other was simply her carefree, informal manner, which would have been grounds for punishment back home.
“So, what brings you here Sky? I know that Alyth has a reputation here as a formidable warrior, but you don’t seem like you enjoy violence much. You do look really quick though, are you a shifter?” Riza, ever prone to chatter, forced herself to shut up after the question. Most people did not enjoy when some random girl continually poked into their business. It didn’t really help that Skyvy was so nervous.
Chess decided at that moment that he liked the young messenger. He purred loudly and rubbed his face against Skyvy’s pants, winding though his legs as he did so. The human girl chuckled, ”Seems like he likes you. He always seems to like those with animal affinities. He also likes those who don’t want him anywhere near them.”
Riza looked to Alyth curiously. “So why did you help me? I mean, usually the unsaid law around here is “fight your own battles” and you seem to be familiar with fighting. You helped Skyvy too, you said. I’ve seen you around before, but somehow you never struck me as the friendly type.” The girl gave a tiny embarrassed start and began to look flustered, “No offense by any of this of course!”

Alyth looked down to her initial charge. Skyvy had a slight frown on his face as if he was contemplating something or was unhappy about something. Alyth couldn't see what, but it was no reason to be unhappy. She had just had a good round of whisky and was well spirited. Well, he needed to cheer up. The poor little thing was incredibly confused and entirely unsociable. He should be more like Riza, seriously. Alyth couldn't help but wonder where this timidly nature came from.
The battle fae shrugged the thanks off indifferently. Riza herself had explained her status as a noblewoman, but her behavior told otherwise. However, she wasn't one to contradict; she herself, a fae should not have been indulging herself in human business. She should have been loyal to the fae as part of the army, yet she took on human jobs and at times ignored the balance. Definitely not much better. "C'mon, kid. Cheer up." She cajoled Skyvy as she ruffled his hair once more. He was tall enough for the battle muse to be resting a light hand on his head as she turned back to a flustered Riza. Chess the Cait Sith was busying himself with Skyvy, leaving her uninterrupted attention on Riza. Instead of an offensive reply, Alyth looked purely amused and even laughed at Riza. "Aren't I?" She chuckled, a smile plastered onto her face. "The people 'round here give me some good money around here; it's important to keep status, though." Alyth was the go-to person as a freelance-knight. However, though many knew this, the battle muse, even though she was a female, was imposing enough to strike fear into many humans. She hoped that this display would be enough to earn her a few more.
"But once in a while, helping a kid or two out ain't too bad, you know?" She nodded towards both Skyvy and Riza herself. It was as if she was the peacekeeper in this tavern--a slack one at that. "Are you two done with your business here, or would you rather go?" Out of the corner of her eyes, she caught sight of a few disappointed looks. Ah, well, more people wanting to try their luck out, eh? Did these humans never learn?

Considering the boy worked for nobles, he easily picked up the familiar lilt in Riza's voice that spoke of a noble upbringing. Occasionally Skyvy himself would slip into the accent, since he was often around it and had been so for many years, though he always slipped back out of it fairly quickly. With that he also noticed the differences - she was laid back, as she said, if her tone and informal way of speaking had anything to say about her personality, which Sky was certain it did. “I believe I owe my old street friends my life once again. I surely wouldn’t be here was it not for their training.” Ah, that made sense. She had probably snuck out often to run with the street rats, which were generally shifters or really low class humans.
Oh, why was her attention on him? The blush from before deepened just a hare, despite his attempts to force it away (which probably just made it worse), as he replied to her. "Ahh... no, I'm not a violent sort of person. I'm just a messenger, actually. I run errands... that sort of thing. Nothing violent about that. Oh, yes, I'm a shifter." He blinked at her, slightly confused by the rush of questions, though it was normal. Anyone not familiar with shifters tended to want to know all about them, which he guessed was true with any race that didn't know much about any other race. Shifters just seemed to get that a lot more. Probably because they were sort of a mystery - never sure which side they were on, never sure what they were planning at any given moment.
The boy jumped a little as something rubbed against his pant leg, and he looke down to find the Cait Sith there. A smile broke out on his face. He liked animals, generally. As long as they weren't trying to kill or eat him, he was fine with them.
Another hair ruffling from Alyth. Sky looked up at her, a small smile pulling at his lips. He didn't mind her keeping her hand atop his head - in fact he was used to it, considering most of the people he dealt with tended to enjoy doing that. "I'm done now, so I don't mind leaving."[/color]
