The King Who Became Truly Heartless
By Than
Many centuries ago Litharia was in it’s most chaotic state. The humans sought to destroy the Fae, the daemons delighted in this and tended to force the two against each other for the mere sport of it. These fights were beginning to take their toll on the Unicorns of Litharia, who had lived for millennia and peace and purity, within the Fae forests. A female Unicorn named Anja had watched the humans brutally kill her mate for sport, during one of their battles. Anja, disgusted and depressed from this display, retreated to the mound where she found the young Fairy Princess, Esmeralda, in the gardens outside of the mound. Esmeralda offered Anja a place to stay within the Mound for as long as Anja needed it. Little did Esmeralda know that Anja was about to give birth to the Fae’s greatest asset in the wars to come. Anja gave birth to a son who the Fae named Aonani.
Esmeralda connected with Aonani almost instantly and the two became rider and steed. For centuries Aonani led the Fae’s armies with Esmeralda as his rider towards the enemy humans. But, Aonani could never hope for this to last forever, for war has a way of destroying things we cherish so much. The Battle of Marsois, was the last battle that Esmeralda rode against the human threat. During she was knocked off of Aonani by the human King, Roden, who proceeded to attack his felled opponent on the grassy knolls outside the city and eventually defeated her as Aonani ran to help, but to no avvail he watched his rider get run through by that madman’s sword. He then charged for Roden, head down, and pierced the human king straight through the heart with his horn. The two sides lost without a leader retreated off to their palaces and Aonani disappeared for several nights before finally returning to find a new Fairy Princess, Islandi and that his mother had mated and was due very soon.
But peace can never be found in such a land. For the human’s had already found a new king in Roden’s brother Frerick, who had preferred to slink around the castle’s in the shadow’s, experimenting with dark magic and turning thing’s into his minions. He had heard of the Fae’s Fairy Tales about Unicorns and their purity and thought it a noble prospect to try to change one with his dark magic. It also happened that he had received word that Anja had conceived another foal and he did not wish for another Unicorn to fight with his wretched enemies. And so he set out on a night where no moon shone to steal Anja from her place with in the gardens and steal her away to the castle, but not without a fight with Aonani and Islandi, who had bonded with each other, but ultimately succeeded and took Anja to the Ice Castle where he began his evil tests.
His magic worked, to an extent, though it could not affect the purity of Anja, who would do whatever was necessary to maintain Litharia’s delicate balance, he managed to taint the unborn child. Nerezza was born not long after, as black as the night and loyal to the king. Anja was ordered to be slaughtered, but she managed to escape and return to the mound. However, Nerezza was bound to the king, although it was not a true bound, for he did not return the connection that Nerezza though they had. And so Frerick took control of Nerezza and trained her until the day that the Fae finally crossed the final line. For he had begun to slowly hammer the Fae into what he thought would be destruction and ruin, but instead they fought back and a massed their army to fight him on the Fields of Plathis.
And so Islandi rode against Fredrick, each riding Aonani and Nerezza respectively, and the two warring species began the battle that they hoped would end it all. Islandi rode against the Fredrick and the two fought each other for what seemed like ages before Islandis finally struck Fredrick with a fatal wound. But Fredrick’s life did not end here, he called for a retreat and fled behind his army into the trees. But he knew his injuries were fatal and called for his army to ride on and let him end his life in peace. But again, this is not the end of his tale…
He made Nerezza stop beside a stream and allowed her to drink as he drew his dagger and plunged It into her neck. She cried out in terror and fought for life as Fredrick killed the creature he had trained for so long, the creature who considered him her closest friend, the creature who should never have died to save one so cold. But Fate has a way of creating good from bad, for though he had slain Nerezza, he had also slain himself. For as he bent beside her body and drank the silver blood that flowed from her wounds, he drank away his heart, all of his emotions, all of his compassion, everything that made him human and leaving him with a body and a soul. The gods had looked down upon the feat and decided that although Nerezza had lived her whole life in service to the cruelest King to live on Litharia’s land she had retained her purity and therefore they had deemed his punishment worthy and had done nothing to stop the king from becoming an animal, heartless, and living on instinct. He was cursed to live, an unusual curse it seems, but this life came at a terrible price, his humanity. He was left to spend eternity in the forests, acting on instinct, never aging, and without the comforts and amenities of humanity.
