The Island really was a mess. Some green was beginning to stick up through the black rock, but not much, and it didn't look very healthy yet. Auspice hadn't spent much time here in his youth, a shame considering he was a Shifter. Perhaps he could have moved there on his own later if he hadn't renounced the Alphas' leadership and started committing taboos. Killing other Shifters probably wasn't the way to pay for a ticket across the sea to the island.
The volcano was probably still active. For all he knew it could blow again any minute and he'd be very, very dead. It was an idiot decision to come loot the place, but nobody had ever praised Auspice over his brains. Actually, when thought about it, nobody had ever really praised him for much of anything. He didn't mind. Praise was something you gave your pet dog when he pissed outside instead of on the good carpet. If somebody was giving you praise, you were probably under their control one way or another.
The weather was pretty freaking wonderful, even if the terrain was pretty hostile at the moment. Some rain, some sun, hot but also humid. He liked humidity. It wasn't, for example, as dry as the Boil would be at this very moment. The other Shifters were probably suffering pretty badly at the moment. He didn't mind digging in this weather. It wasn't difficult work, he had a good shovel, and he'd already found some remnants of the old Shifter life pre-volcano. It wasn't like the residents were coming back this afternoon, with the volcano still a little iffy.
He wasn't sure about the hidden treasure, for the most part Auspice was just trying to loot what was left behind by fleeing refugees. Still, it would be great to find something that was actually worth finding, instead of old weatherbeaten fishing gear and such. His mother always went on and on about the legends from the island, as if she missed the place. She wasn't as fond of the City of Thieves as she was of the island, obviously.
Maybe the things they said about the volcano were true, too. Maybe if he found himself a sacrifice, perhaps Than, he could wish for whatever the hell he wanted. Auspice laughed aloud at the thought, and got back to work digging. Than, falling right into the heart of the volcano, screaming orders at his men as he went, maybe trying some magic, and Auspice getting no wishes or all the wishes in the world, not really caring one way or another.
He suddenly felt like something was watching him. He couldn't quite place the feeling, he just felt like something was trying to sneak up on him from behind. Great- a sudden bout of paranoia on a deserted island. He was alone, how the hell could anybody be sneaking up on him? As if to cure the feeling, he looked around. Nope, nothing.
Out of nowhere, Nothing chirped. Or barked. Something in between chirping and barking, apparently. Auspice dropped the shovel and, rather annoyed at the whole situation, set out to look for whatever Nothing happened to be.
